Current day Monterey may be famous for it's world renowned Bay Aquarium, nearby golf resorts and tournaments, and protected Marine Sanctuary (the bay itself), but it also has quite an interesting history. Explored by the Spanish in the 1500's and settled in 1770 as one of the early California missions established by Father Junipero Serra, Monterey was actually the first Capital of California, prior to it's statehood.
Monterey was known for it's fisheries up through the 1950's and immortalized in John Steinbecks novel Cannery Row. The area has become a well-known destination for it's beaches, resorts, diving, and proximity to Big Sur and San Francisco. Monterey also hosts several higher education institutions, including the California State University of Monterey Bay, the Defense Language Institute, the Naval Postgraduate School, the Monterey Institute of International studies and others.
Needless to say, Monterey has something to offer everyone, from college to retirement. Students of MBIE love living near the beach, if even for a short time, enjoying the outdoors, nightlife, shopping, excellent dining (the local seafood is fabulous!), and excellent locally roasted coffee! The time spent in Monterey attending MBIE is certain to be a time fondly remembered not only for the superior training, but also for it's coveted location.
